How are drains repaired and relined?

Drain pipe repair and relining is a big part of drain management.

Over time, even the most robust drain pipe will experience wear-and-tear and therefore require some upkeep. And this means you’ll have to arrange for repair or relining to keep drains healthy and functioning properly.

So in this article, we’ll take you through the basics of how drains are repaired and relined.

How are drains repaired?

Depending on the drainage issue, this will affect how the drain is repaired. If the drain’s issues are related to blockages, then unblocking services will be required using water jetting technology.

If the drain has collapsed completely, a replacement of that section of drain will be required, which will usually involve site excavation and laying of a new pipe.

Old plumbing that is causing a lot of problems for the homeowner may need a rerouting of the plumbing, rather than continual repair of the old and failing system.

And finally, cracked pipes or pipes affected by root intrusion can be fixed with a non-intrusive method called drain relining to seal the pipe walls once again.

What is drain relining?

Drain relining is a form of no-dig drain repair that’s highly useful for homeowners and commercial sites alike, as it means no mess, no excavation and no disruption, answering a big question on many people’s lips: can a drain be repaired without digging it up?

The answer is yes! Drain relining is a method of drain repair whereby a resin-coated liner is placed into the drain to seal any cracks and holes along the interior by bonding to the internal surface. This is done without the need for excavation or digging.

How are drains relined?

Usually, drain relining involves inserting an epoxy resin-soaked liner down into the afflicted section of pipe through access points in the drain. Small cameras inserted into the drain are used to monitor the operation and to ensure that the liner is put in place where it needs to be. The resin then bonds the liner to the interior of the pipe, sealing it and relining it.

How long does drain relining last?

Depending on the materials selected and the expertise of the drain repair company chosen, a relined drain can maintain its quality for many decades – sometimes as long as 50 years!
